Music
Islamic music is influenced by many different cultures. Most frequently played is a traditional folk music known as ‘malouf’ that features violins, drums, sitars, flutes and a solo vocalist. Malouf is based on a type of ancient poetry called 'qasidah' that comes in various forms, both traditional and contemporary. Traditional music is still very popular in Tunisia, with the all-female El-Azifet group being one of the most famous.
Today, music festivals such as Tabarka Jazz Festival, Carthage Jazz Festival and the International Music Festival, held in the impressive remains of the El Jem Coliseum, are gaining international recognition. Throughout the summer months various music festivals playing traditional music take place across the country including in Testour, Hammamet, Sfax, Tabarka, Carthage, Sousse and Bizerte.
