The World Wars
Around 60,000 Tunisian troops fought in World War I, 10,000 of whom lost their lives. By the time the Second World War came around, despite the recent difficulties under French rule, Tunisia came out in support of the French and the Allies. In 1940, military targets were bombed by the Italians and by 1942, German troops arrived, holding the country until the arrival of liberating Allied Forces on 7th May 1943.
Along with the thousands of lives lost, Sfax and Sousse suffered heavy damage and many more towns, including Bizerte, Gabes and Tunis, were bombarded.
