Gabes
Gabes is situated in the gulf of the same name, and is probably most famous for its traditional souks in Jarah and its unusual seaside oasis – the only such example of this in the world. It was originally founded as a Phoenician harbour.
The Mareth Line Museum is an admirable attraction dedicated to this episode, and would definitely be of interest to anyone with a fascination for military history.
Today, Gabes it is still the administrative and economic centre of the region (also named after the city), with one of the largest ports in the country. Gabes, being a large industrial city, also has a famous university.
Gabes’ popularity comes from its unique combination of attractions; city, sea, mountains, oasis and desert – whatever you want to do, or if you want to do a bit of everything, this is the place to come.
