Mahdia
The sleepy town of Mahdia is set in the middle of what many consider to be Tunisia’s most beautiful stretch of beach. The town is one of the most important fishing ports in Tunisia and the local speciality is sardines, caught by lamplight. The flicker of a thousand candles illuminating the sea is a remarkable sight on warm summer evenings.
Mahdia is also known for the exquisite creations of its embroiderers and tailors whose silk work, interlaced with golden thread, is outstanding.
Eating out
Mahdia has some wonderful cafes in and around the Place du Caire that serve marvellous mint tea and Turkish coffee. Freshly grilled fish is one of many culinary highlights.
Getting around
Most places are accessible on foot; for longer distances, local taxis are inexpensive.
Don’t miss
The lively Friday souk that stretches along the coast for nearly a mile. Look out for shops selling fine traditional Tunisian wedding costumes.
The Borj el Kebir, a 16th century Turkish fort that provides a magnificent view over the heartland.
