Monastir & Skanes
Originally built as a trading post by the Phoenicians and then taken over by the Romans under the mane of Ruspina, Monastir became important again in the eight century with the establishment of its fortified ribat, an imposing defence against seafaring invaders.
The town is home to the family mausoleum of former president Habib Bourguiba. Its gold and green domes and gilt-tipped minarets are particularly beautiful at night, when the mausoleum is illuminated.
Most visitors stay in the tourist resort of Skanes, which is about six miles from Monastir town centre, and ideal for a relaxing beach holiday, with golden sand and excellent water sport facilities.
Eating out
The prettiest place to eat is the marina, particularly on a warm evening when the terrace restaurants come alive. Le Grill and The Captain both have a good reputation, and most restaurants serve freshly-caught fish.
Getting around
There are frequent Metro services to and from Monastir airport. A tourist train also links the hotels in Skanes with central Monastir. Local taxis are inexpensive and readily available.
Don’t miss
The ribat of Harthema – an eighth century fortress, perched on a headland above the marina. It had a starring role in the classic Monty Python comedy 'Life of Brian'.
The picturesque marina which, as well as being home to both a scuba diving school and a water sports centre, has an excellent selection of cafes and restaurants where visitors can sit and watch the world go by.
