Kerkennah Islands
The Kerkennah Islands attract people looking for peace and tranquility. The islands offer fine white sand beaches, cool sea breezes, and excellent snorkelling . The main resort is Sidi Frej, where you can walk along the shore to see the ruined fort at Borj el-Hissar. Kerkennah remains relatively untouched by the modern world.
Just 20 km (12 miles) off the Sfax coast, the Kerkennah Islands have an intimate, secluded feel, strengthened by the fact that out of the twelve islands, only two are inhabited. Such privacy makes them the perfect place to visit or stay if you’re looking to escape – a fact not lost on Roman outlaws, who used the Kerkennah Islands as a successful hideout! The tranquil atmosphere and fine white sand beaches which turn the islands such an idyllic spot make it easy to see why it became a refuge, and just as easy for you to feel you’ll never want to leave. However, don’t worry about becoming bored – is the Kerkennahs are also an excellent site for snorkelling, the islands are flat and so ideal for cycling and there are the Borj el-Hissar ruins in case you require a destination point on your wander out.
