Southern Tunisia

Southern Tunisia map

One of the popular attractions of Tunisia is the chance to combine a beach holiday with the adventure of a trip to the Golden South, as the Sahara desert covers most of the south of Tunisia.

Shimmering salt lakes and luxuriant palm tree oases combine with surreal mirages and stunning sunsets to create an unforgettable experience.

For the film buff it is possible to visit the film locations of Star Wars and The English Patient. For the adventurous, a camel ride into the desert is a unique and enjoyable experience. Or, for those who prefer some speed, you can always 4x4 or quad-bike through the sand dunes.

Highlights

The exceptional food, the warmth of the people, the exceptional year-round climate makes Tunisia’s southern region a favourite destination for any traveller seeking an unforgettable and exotic variety of experiences found almost nowhere else in the world.

For a real Arabian adventure, there are the camel treks and Bedouin camping excursions that run from one hour to two weeks, and have every level of comfort from the inclusion of pre and post-trek accommodation and 5* tents, food and equipment fit for a Sultan, to the exhilaration of very much ‘roughing it’ in Bedouin tents, bringing your own wine and cooking your own food under the stars.

There is also a 'baptism of the air' - a hot air balloon or microlight trip that give you a bird’s eye view of the desert for a relatively small fee – a hot-air balloon flight over the Sahara just as the sun is rising is one spectacle no-one should miss if they have the chance.

For a truly memorable experience, take a 4x4 safari (hire them out or bring your own!) across the shimmering Chott El Jerid salt lake, one of the principal locations in the Oscar winning film The English Patient (the famous Star Wars locations are on the opposite shore, and many companies run 4x4 rides to visit both).

And for the speed-freaks, you can hire a quad bike to go bouncing and hurtling over the dunes - an opportunity not be missed! Quad bikes always travel in packs with an experienced leader.

The prime months for discovering this unique landscape are April-May and October-November.
