The Jerid
Chott el-Jerid is the vast salt lake where Luke Skywalker contemplated the two moons in the first Star Wars film. In real life, the heat and reflections create startling mirages that make you feel you are on another planet. And you’ll be amazed at what you find in the pretty towns of Tozeur, Nefta, Kebili, Douz and Zaafrane and their surrounding oases.
With the vast, glittering salt lake of Chott el-Jerid that unfolds across half the entire width of Tunisia, this region is one of the country's most interesting areas, as well as one of outstanding natural beauty. Spanning the lake, the road that runs from Douz to Tozeur was, until almost the mid-19th century, used to transport slaves to the immense market in Kebili– although it is today, of course, used almost exclusively by holiday-makers taking in the spectacular scenery.
The vicinity of these lakes is also home to many of the most beautiful oases and ancient towns in the country, such as Tozeur that has some 3,000 palm trees, as well as prolific fig, banana and pomegranate groves. A smaller area of oases also occurs at Nefta, and at various other locations beside the lake, including Chebika and Tamerza, which are Tunisia’s best-known mountain oases.
