The Sahel

An inset map image of The Sahel region

With its long sandy beaches and jasmine scented nights, the Sahel is the heart of Tunisia. Here, sprinkled along the Mediterranean, you’ll find Tunisia’s most famous resorts and yacht harbours. You’ll also discover Sousse, ‘the Pearl of the Sahel’, historic Mahdia and Sfax, plus a lot of friendly, old world charm.

To both the Phoenicians and the Romans, the Sahel was a region of paramount importance, encompassing many of their most crucial colonies including Sousse and El-Jem, some of the richest towns in Roman Africa. Such financially powerfully communities were able to fund ambitious construction projects such as the amphitheatre at El-Jem, which still stands today and is an attractive destination for a cultural afternoon. It is a good starting point from which to explore a region which now counts its wealth in culture rather than currency. As you can wander Mahdia, the old capital of Tunisia, you will find many remarkable examples of architecture, including the ‘ribats’ (fortified Islamic monasteries), which stand as a reminder of the region’s past when it was under constant threat from Christian invaders and piracy.
