Commonly voted as one of the must-do things before you die is  the 'Red Lizard train', a passenger train from the 19th century that runs along old mining tracks from Metlaoui to Redeyef (which is about a 45 min journey) through the red and pink rocks, split by canyons of the Saharan Atlas mountains in central Tunisia.

The train and track were built in 1910 by the Tunisian Govenor. The 'Lizard' also used to serve the phosphate mines from Metaloui, but now it is only a tourist attraction. Today, this is the only way to visit the gorges of Selja. Each day the Red Lizard Train leaves around 10am from the station of Meltaoui, about 40km (25 miles) from Tozeur.

Passing through wonderful scenary this old fashioned train will take you on a journey through stony desert landscapes, mountains tunnels, steel bridges, water springs, deep gorges, finally coming to a stop in a green oasis. A fantastic adventure.

Hunting of wild boar still takes place in the regions of Tabarka and Ain Draham and is organized during the autumn and winter months. The mountains of Kroumirie are abound with game and attract hunters from all over Europe. [If you wish to hunt you will need to obtain hunting licenses.]

Ain Draham is a hilltop retreat developed by the French, ostensively as a hunting resort. The village with its many red roofs has a distinctly French look. It lies on the flank of the Kroumirie Mountain’s highest peak, Jebel Biri, at 1,014 m (3,327 ft).

If hunting is not your thing, you can book to go Horse riding in this area and along the beaches of the Tabarka region with In the Saddle, to visit their website click here www.inthesaddle.co.uk

Tunisia is a gentle introduction to North Africa, with its friendly Berber people and temperate climate. We traverse this diverse country from the Mediterranean to the Sahara, visiting spectacular Roman sites, mountainous fortified kasbahs and the shady forests of the north. We visit Kairouan, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the area around Matmata, a dramatic landscape often used by Hollywood, also home to a number of troglodyte dwellings. Heading south, the Chott el Jerid salt lake appears mirage-like against the sand, and we enjoy the unforgettable experience of a camel trek into the Sahara to sleep amongst the silent dunes.
